Northern Israel ItinerariesGolan HeightsRugged, steppe like, volcanic terrain dominates the landscape. Interesting
at all times of the year, the Golan harbours residents such as Griffon
Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle, Fan-tailed Warbler and Calandra Lark. Summer
breeders include White Stork, Egyptian Vulture, Great-spotted Cuckoo,
Red-rumped Swallow, Masked and Woodchat Shrikes and Black-headed Bunting. Mount HermonPeaks over 2000 metres above sea level, is part of the Irano-Turanian
mountain range. It contains three distinct altitudinal belts, each with
its characteristic species, sixteen of which breed nowhere else in Israel. Typically, Rock Nuthatch, Syrian Serin (only small numbers in winter), Sombre Tit and Rock Bunting may be found throughout the year. Spring and summer may yield Crimson-winged Finch, Shore Lark and Rock Thrush near the higher reaches of the mountain. Lower down, the terrace like slopes near Majd el Shams are alive with singing warblers and buntings. Among these, we may find Orphean, Upcher's and Olive-tree Warblers, Cretzschmar's and Black-headed Buntings. The GalileeThe hills and ravines around the Sea of Galilee harbour some very interesting
species throughout the year including Griffon Vulture, Black Francolin,
Eagle Owl, Little Swift, Blue Rock Thrush, Raven and Rock Sparrow. Jezreel, Bet Shean & Jordan ValleysThese low-lying valleys are very fertile and dominated by agricultural fields and fishponds. The whole area is extremely productive for a wide variety of birds, which often occur in huge concentrations. Resident species include Black Francolin, Pied and Smyrna Kingfishers, Clamorous Reed Warbler and Dead Sea Sparrow. Ring-necked Parakeet and Indian Silverbill are established feral breeders.
