Europhoto 6 - The solution

Intermediate Egret Egretta intermediaThe December mystery bird was an Intermediate Egret Egretta intermedia, photographed in The Gambia, West Africa in January 2003. This species shows a curious combination of features that can suggest both Cattle Egret Bulbucus ibis and Great White Egret Egretta alba. In this shot, the pratincole to the lower left of the egret gives a sense of scale. The pratincole, incidentally, is a Collared Glareola pratincola.

Species mentioned in our entries included Great White Egret, Western Reef Heron, Snowy Egret, and Cattle Egret.

In the West Palearctic there are records from Jordan, Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands and more recently Italy in 2001, which was the first European record. On the fringe of the West Palearctic region it occurs as a scarce visitor to parts of Mauritania. There is a good possibility that this species is one of the more overlooked birds in the West Palearctic region and there are no confirmed records from Israel to date.
