Hiking the Ketura Wilderness: December 2002
All digiscoping photography courtesy of James. P. Smith ©

With the ensuing stable days of winter bringing the tail end of the autumn migration, I've been able to continue my exploration of the local wadis within the
Ketura Reserve. Much of these areas are only accessible by foot, involving long hikes to reach the most impressive sites. However, the rewards are rich both in terms of landscape and the thinly distributed, but high quality species that inhabit the desert wadis in winter.

During visits on the 6th, 7th and 10th of December I found six wintering Striated Scops Owls, plus Cyprus Warbler, a probable 'Desert' Lesser Whitethroat, and a very unseasonable Great Spotted Cuckoo.

We hope you enjoy this gallery selection of some the better images.

Happy hiking!
