James Smith's daily sightings reports 23nd November 2001 - Kibbutz Lotan There wasn't too much time for me to spend birding today and the brief walk that I had around the Kibbutz this morning would suggest that if anything autumn migration was finally slowing down. Chiffchaffs were noticeably few, just a handful of Red-throated, Meadow and Water Pipits were on the soccer field, and a Black Kite drifted north. However, the day was not without excitement. During the morning I received a phone call from a friend in Eilat to say that he had relocated the Red-wattled Lapwing by the modern sewage complex at Km.19 near Eilat. It was great to know that the bird was still around but slightly frustrating to think that I'd spent most of the day in the area yesterday and yet the thought had not crossed my mind to look behind this new complex. The place looked so sterile that I just couldn't imagine any bird wanting to spend time there, least of all a Red-wattled Lapwing. Still I guess that's why we all enjoy birding, nothing is quite that predictable. Good birding, James Smith Contact infoDaphna Abell |
